Wikipedia Zero |Free For All
The advent of Smart phones have made it easier for people to access all sorts of information easier, faster, and anywhere. But information comes with a price, and not all can afford. Luckily, Wikimedia solves this problem with Wikipedia Zero
Wikipedia is an online virtual library with various informative articles.
Wikimedia, in partnership with Smart, the largest telecommunications company in the country with 68.9 million users, offered to the Philippines the unlimited access to Wikipedia, accessible through m.wikipedia.org, zero.wikipedia.org, Wikipedia apps(available on iOS and Android devices), and all sorts of wikipedia sites on mobiles, free of data charges until February 3, 2015.
Using its PowerApp mobile internet platform, Smart started the free Wikipedia access. Subscribers of Smart, Talk’N Text, and Sun Cellular can avail the service by downloading the Power App mobile Application and send a text code.
This Initiative aims to make information more accessible to the public without the restrictions of data charges. Learning made easier and more convenient for Filipinos.
Wikipedia zero is Wikimedia’s initiative to provide knowledge and information for everyone around the world that cannot afford data charges.
Aside from the Wikipedia Zero, Smart and Wikimedia had also been collaborating for the “Tap & learn: Tablets for Education” project and WikiExpedition.
“Tap & learn: Tablets for Education”
This project aims to make the learning experience in public schools better with Wikipedia. Filipino Wikipedia editors help train public school teachers and instructors from elementary and secondary schools in the country on how to use Wikipedia, for enhanced learning for students.
Promotes culture and heritage that features the cultural areas in the country, museums, and other places of interests that reflects the Filipino culture.
Last September the WikiExpedition was initialized. Twenty-three Wikimedia Philippines representatives and volunteers went to Sta Ana, Manila and mapped more than 40 heritage sites. They took photos and wrote articles to be uploaded to Wikipedia and other Wikimedias and GPS coordinates of each were plotted to the Philippine heritage map.
This is an effort to further promote the heritage and culture, to make Filipinos aware of their history and for Foreigners to further appreciate what the Philippines has to offer.
