A Nurse Topnotcher’s Story

“One does not need to be a Laude in order to be a topnotcher”, says Mr. Elijah Catacutan Legaspi, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduate last April 2014. He ranked first out of 26,690 takers who took the Nursing Licensure Exam (NLE) held last November 29 & 30, 2014 with an average score of 86.60% as the Professional Regulation Commision (PRC) released the results last January 24, 2015.

So average na student lang” when asked about him graduating with flying colors.

Buhay Kolehiyo got the chance to have a brief interview with him:

Q: What paved the way and motivated you to reach that goal?

I want to prove na I deserve more, na hindi lang ako magse-settle dito. So gusto ko lagi ako nagsstrive and syempre gusto ko din magbring ng honor na may topnotcher sa family namin”

Q: Did you expect being the topnotcher?

Yung tipong pagpasa na lang sa board exams ida-doubt mo pa sarili mo, so what more pa yung pagiging topnotcher”

Q: What are your preparations before taking the NLE?

I admit, meron kaming ‘bible’ sa Nursing (We consider them as bible kasi yun yung books na dapat mo talaga basahin cover to cover kapag magbo-board exam ka). I made sure na hindi compromised yung sleep. I really valued my physical health in preparation for the board. In terms of sacrifices, less time for family bonding to give way sa pagrereview ko.

Q: How did PLM helped you achieve this accomplishment?

Q: What was your Initial reaction when you knew about the results?

L: “That day before irelease yung results, kinakabahan ako. Then ang daming nag message na ‘Congrats!’ then tinag ako as number one. ‘So wait, ano ibig niyong sabihin?’ Tumawag sila sa relatives namin to share. First time nagkaroon ng topnotcher sa both sides ng family ko kaya they were really proud of me especially grandma who’s in Nueva Ecija”

Q: How does it feel that the Press is looking after you?

L: “Walang magbabago. Actually di pa din nagsisink-in eh. Lahat tayo nakapasa. Lahat tayo Registered Nurses. Lahat tayo pantay-pantay. Etong board exam na to, numbers lang yan, wala diyan yung skills naten. Pag naging topnotcher ka, wag lalaki yung ulo, stay down to earth, mag thank you ka kapag binabati ka. Wag kang snob, then balikan mo lahat ng tumulong sayo, kung nasaan ka man ngayon. Pasalamatan mo ung mga professors mo and ung mga teachers mo. Wag kang makakalimot sa kanila.”

Q: How did you review?

L: “Nakakalat yung books everywhere [sa room]. May mga review bullets din na nakapost sa wall, pero mas lalo akong nastress kaya I removed it.”

Q: What is your message to our readers?

L: “To my future colleagues, huwag matakot mangarap! Always have faith in Him kasi hinding hindi nya tayo bibiguin. Kudos and keep the fire of Nightingale’s lamp burning! To God be the glory!”

Mr. Legaspi got plans of taking Medicine afterwards. He’s looking forward to taking the NMAT this coming November so that by next year, he can take his Medicine degree, still in his beloved state-university, PLM. For now, he’ll take part-time work but he wants to serve local hospitals to apply his knowledge in the field and serve his countrymen as well.

Congratulations to all the Registered Nurses out there!
